'The Avengers' are box office superheroes, with $200.3 million

As many had predicted, Disney/Marvel’s much-awaited The Avengers set an all-time industry record by grossing $200.3 million domestically (May4-6), shattering the previous record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 with $169 million. The Disney tentpole’s international cume is now $641.8 million through Sunday with 12 days in release in other territories. Marvel’s The Avengers has now opened in all major markets except Israel, Poland, and Japan.Last month, Marvel and Disney announced that a sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger will be released April 4, 2014. A sequel to last summer’s Thor is scheduled for release November 15, 2013, and the third installment of the hit Iron Man series, which has earned over $1.2 billion worldwide, will arrive in theaters May 3, 2013.Meanwhile, Sony/Aardman’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits dropped down to No. 5 on the domestic box office chart. The pic, which was released stateside on April 27 has now made, $18,563,000 in the U.S. and  $70,400,000  in foreign territories. The next big animated release is DreamWorks Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted on June 8, followed by Disney/Pixar’s Brave on June 22.
