Major LightWave Upgrade Announced at SIGGRAPH
The LightWave 3D Group announced today LightWave 11.5, the
most-recent version of its Emmy-winning 3D modeling, animation and
rendering software.A complete 3D pipeline, LightWave 11.5 adds features to streamline
productivity, including a new Genoma character animation and rigging
system for Modeler, predator and prey flocking, Instancing, soft-body
Bullet Dynamics, interchange support for Adobe After Effects and
Pixologic’s GoZ Fiber Mesh, major workflow enhancements and more.“LightWave 11.5 elevates artistic freedom with innovative new
features and workflow enhancements that are designed to streamline
productivity,” said Rob Powers, president, LightWave 3D Group. “From
fast interactive stereoscopic rendering in the VPR to physically
accurate hard-body and soft-body Bullet Dynamics, LightWave 11.5
continues to reinforce its leadership position as an end-to-end
pipeline.”LightWave 11.5’s new features and enhancements include:
- Genoma: A new modular instant-rigging system that can be used to quickly rig a simple biped or quadruped for animation in Modeler without the need for specialized rigging tools. It offers modular rig presets that consist of skeletal parts such as spines, wings, arms, legs, hands and feet. Complete rigs for biped and quadrupeds can easily be customized using Genoma.
- Modeling Tools: New functionality and architectural advancements in Modeler allow for faster interactivity, performance, and tool development. LightWave 11.5 introduces many new tools like UV Unwrap, Edit Edges, Place Mesh, Slice, Thicken and Heat Shrink that emphasize the system’s power and lay the groundwork for future third-party modeling tool development.
- Soft-Body Bullet Dynamics: Bullet now includes soft-body dynamics for effects such as cloth, rubber, jelly or other deforming properties. Bullet meshes are also now reactive to bone deformations and wind forces can also be added for rippling effects.
- Flocking: A specialized particle system that allows items to move in very organic ways, Flocking offers new prey and predator behaviors that allow flocks to chase other flocks or have flocking agents seek out and chase the closest prey. Neutral flocks do not chase or chase but still affect other agents for collision avoidance. Other new features include Plane, Pursuit and Arrive directors and the addition of node controls.
- Interchange Tools: A new GoAE button allows you to select elements in a scene and see them in Adobe After Effects—including animation, lights and camera setting. Changes can be made using Camera Tracker in After Effects before returning to Lightwave. GoZ technology for Pixologic’s ZBrush allows you to send models to and from LightWave with automatic node flows for textures and normal maps. ZBrush styling tools can also be imported to LightWave and attached to objects.
- Instancing: Now includes Per-Object control of scale, stretch, offset, rotate and nodal controls, along with new Copy and Paste functions and Path Mode optimizations for greater flexibility and workflow.
- ViewPort Preview Renderer: VPR transforms how artists work in LightWave with fast interactive onscreen rendering. LightWave 11.5 now supports depth-of-field and motion blur effects and stereoscopic rendering in VPR.
- Pricing and Availability: Purchase or upgrade to LightWave 11 for $1,495 and automatically receive LightWave 11.5 at no extra cost when publicly available. Upgrade pricing from earlier versions of LightWave is $695. LightWave 11.5 is expected to ship Q4 2012 at a suggested retail price of $1,495. Educational pricing is also available. Visit www.lightwave3d.com to purchase or locate an authorized LightWave reseller.

Veteran Animator Jim Hiltz Dies at 85
The Animation Guild Blog reports that veteran animator, director and
teacher Jim Hiltz has passed away at the age of 85. Best known for
directing Jay Ward’s Rocky and His Friends, The Bullwinkle Show, Super Chicken and George of the Jungle TV series and the 1980 Oscar-nominated short History of the World in Three Minutes Flat, Hiltz
had a long career working at production studios such at TerryToons,
FilmFair, Bill Melendez Studios and Michael Mills Studios.
He directed the 1965 TV series The Beatles and worked as an animator on the 1968 feature Yellow Submarine. His animation credits also include the TV movies The Raccoons on Ice (1981), The Racoons and the Lost Star (1983) The Care Bears in the Land Without Feelings (1983) and The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine (1984), and the series The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin (1987), The Raccoons (1985-1987), The Smoggies (1989) and The Little Flying Bears (1990). During the 1990s, he worked on The Legend of White Fang, Spirou, David Copperfield, The Busy World of Richard Scarry and The Country Mouse and the City Mouse Adventures.
Emmy-winning director Eddy Houchins who worked with Hiltz in the
beginning of his career recalls, “As a young animator, I got my first
‘real’ job at Michael Mills’ place in 1980 and immediately met Jim who
took me and all the other young animators under his wing. In those
days, we had not just respect, but downright AWE for the older guys who
had ‘been there.’ We hung on his every word and studied his pencil
tests frame by frame, soaking up his drawing skills and timing
finesse. At night, after he’d go home, we’d slip into his office and sit
and flip his drawings on a light table just to study ‘the real thing.’
I learned more about animation from my three years working under Jim
as my director than I ever learned in school or on any other job.
After his stint at Mills, he freelanced and taught at Concordia
University for awhile, and, I suppose, eventually retired.”
Houchins adds. “I remember I was at the Ottawa [International
Animation] Festival with him in 1983, and June Foray and Bill Scott
were there and performed a Rocky and Bullwinkle script live
to our delight. Afterwards, I was standing with Jim in the lobby and
when June walked out, he said to me, ‘Hang on, I have to say hello to an
old friend.’ He walked up to June, said, ‘Remember me?’ and she
screamed, ‘JIM!!!’ and practically jumped into his arms. Maybe you
guys can break the news to her. I sure can’t

Adobe Announces $1M Scholarship Fund
The Adobe Foundation is donating one million dollars to establish the
Adobe Foundation Creativity Scholarships, a new global initiative
intended to unlock the creative potential of students. Offered to
high-school seniors who participate in the Adobe Youth Voices program,
the scholarship will help them continue their education, pursue creative
careers and find innovative ways to improve their communities.Students from the Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) network, which includes
more than 800 sites in 52 countries, will be eligible to apply for the
scholarships. AYV is Adobe’s signature global philanthropy initiative
focused on teaching youth from underserved communities the power of
creative self-expression and global citizenship. The first scholarship
application cycle is expected to begin in spring 2013, with awards
distributed for the start of the academic year beginning in fall 2013.
“The urge to create has never been stronger, and the ability to create
is unprecedented, yet a new global study shows that most people feel
they are not living up to their own creative potential,” says Shantanu
Narayen, president and chief executive officer, Adobe. “We challenge the
notion that creativity is reserved for an elite few, and believe that
no matter what you do, everyone has the potential to be creative.”
The Adobe Foundation Creativity Scholarships will be focused on youth
who plan to pursue an academic program or career in a creative field at
an accredited college, university or certification program. Scholarships
will be based on financial need, academic performance and potential.
Individual scholarship amounts and lengths will vary based on country,
curriculum and other factors.
Additional details about the application process will be announced later this year.

Earth Hour
Earth Hour 2012 will take place on March 31, 2012 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.In February, Earth Hour launched its 2012 campaign, “I Will If You Will”, with the intention of engaging its growing global community to go beyond the hour and coordinate their efforts publicly through Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and email. Using a dedicated YouTube platform, IWIYW asks Earth Hour's digital community to inspire people from all corners of the globe to take sustainability actions, and to share their commitment to the environment with their own social media networks.
Executive Director and Co-Founder Andy Ridley said, "Earth Hour’s challenge is no longer to connect people; the challenge is to offer a reason to connect. Any movement of change begins with symbolism - it’s a needed step to prove enough people care about an issue. Earth Hour is past the beginning now, and lots of people are switching their lights off every year in March. We’re now at the stage of taking it beyond the hour."
Youtube, following the previous year's example, changed its logo and added a switch on/off feature near the title of each video, so that users can change the background color from white to black.
Further proof of Earth Hour's change in direction came when it was announced its global headquarters was moving from Sydney to Singapore. A launch event took place at ION Orchard on February 20, where it was announced that the move was supported by Singapore's Economic Development Board (EDB).
