Disney’s ‘Paperman’ to Screen with ‘Wreck-It Ralph’
Disney has announced that its acclaimed new short Paperman will premiere with Wreck-It Ralph
on November 2, 2012. Directed by John Kahrs and produced by Kristina
Reed, this groundbreaking short film mixes the best of the
computer-generated and hand-drawn animation worlds.Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story
of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes
an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his
morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he
gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the
avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of
papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what fate has
in store for him.Kahrs, a veteran animator who joined WDAS in 2007, led an innovative
team of 2D and CG artists who used a proprietary program called Meander
to create the short. Employing a technique called final line advection,
artists were able to add a level of grace and expressiveness never
before seen in an animated film. The world premiere of the short took place on the opening night
of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, June 4, 2012. Its
U.S. premiere is slated for the Los Angeles Film Festival this Sunday

Acker Dives into New Animated Feature ‘Deep’
Shane Acker
Brown Bag Films’ co-founder Darragh O’Connell announced the launch of a new animated feature called Deep,
about a post-apocalyptic undersea adventure, at the Annecy Festival on
Friday. The pic, which will be directed by Shane Acker (9) and
written by J. Barton Mitchell, will explore new gaming technologies to
deliver the film at a fraction of the time an cost of other animated
movies. It will be produced by O’Connell and Gregory R. Little (Escape from Planet Earth, Nutty Professor).Deep is set in a not-too-distant future when what’s left of
humanity has moved undersea to stay alive. The story revolves around the
crew of the nuclear submarine Norwood as they race to uncover the
secrets behind the Wayfarers, a mysterious splinter group with the
potential to wipe out humanity altogether. The production team has been
working in collaboration with videogame developer Valve (Half Life, Portal),
which has provided new tools and technologies based on the developer’s
Source game engine. The tools enable flexible cinematography and
editing, a simplified character animation process and economical
lighting, sound and visual effects.Originally conceived as a graphic novel by Mitchell, Deep
will initially be produced as feature film; however, producing in a game
engine means that the characters and environments can easily translate
to a game format. The team has already begun work on a playable level to
be distributed via Steam, Valve’s online game distribution network, and
plans to create additional content for digital distribution and provide
opportunities for user-created content.
“Since the success of 9, I’ve been approached with several
science fiction-fantasy projects but so many lack substance beneath the
slick special effects,” said Acker. “‘Deep offers real sci-fi
credentials but the story is rooted in the complex motivations of the
characters making tough choices between right and wrong. I’m excited to
be part of a team that is redefining what storytelling in general, and
animation in particular, can be.”
Dublin based Brown Bag films is the artist-owned and operated shop behind the Oscar-nominated shorts Give Up Yer Aul Sins (2002) and Grammy O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty (2010) and the hit animated shows The Octonauts and Doc McStuffins.

GKids to Release Ghibli’s ‘Poppy Hill’
New York-based indie distributor GKIDS announced today that it has picked up Studio Ghibli’s award-winning 2011 movie From Up on Poppy Hill.
Although the national release date in the U.S. will officially be March
2013, the studio is planning a special Academy Award consideration
window for the film later this year. The pickup comes on the heels of a
spate of recently announced foreign acquisitions by GKIDS including Zarafa (Pathe, France), The Rabbi’s Cat (TF1, France), A Letter to Momo (Production I.G, Japan), Le Tableau (Rezo, France), Wrinkles (Six Sales, Spain) and Tales of the Night (Studio Canal, France).
Last year, GKIDS has picked up the North American theatrical rights
to 13 Studio Ghibli titles, including Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in The Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke. The Studio Ghibli retrospective has been touring major North American markets throughout 2012.From Up on Poppy Hill was the top-grossing Japanese film of
2011, earning over $56 million at the Japanese box office and winning
the Japan Academy Prize for Animation in 2012. The film was directed by
Goro Miyazaki from a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki, marking the first
feature collaboration between father and son. An English-language
version is being produced by Studio Ghibli with Kathleen Kennedy and
Frank Marshall executive producing.Set in Yokohama in 1963, the film centers on a high school couple’s
innocent love and the secrets surrounding their births. The story takes
place in a Japan that is picking itself up from the devastation of World
War II and preparing to host the 1964 Olympics – and the mood is one of
both optimism and conflict as the new generation struggles to embrace
modernity and throw off the shackles of a troubled past. The film’s rich
color palette and painterly detail capture the beauty of Yokohama’s
harbor and its lush surrounding hillsides, while the 1960’s pop
soundtrack evokes nostalgia for an era of innocence and hope.
“We are thrilled and honored to be continuing our collaboration with Studio Ghibli for the upcoming Poppy Hill release,” said GKIDS president Eric Beckman. “Working together to bring the Ghibli retrospective to North American theaters this year has been a wonderfully rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, and the response to the films has been nothing short of amazing. We are looking forward to extending the relationship and bringing yet another Ghibli gem to American audiences.”
